May - Karen Thornton

“A Quilter's Journey of Faith” - May Lecture (May 19th)

May’s speaker is Karen Thornton. She will share her exciting journey from a traditional quilter to an art quilter. Don’t miss this inspiring presentation and beautiful designs! The quilt pictured is done with Shiva Paint Sticks over rubbing plates, one example of her innovative and beautiful work and one technique you will learn in the workshop! The other shots are fun from a previous workshop with Karen.

WORKSHOP- ART TECHNIQUES FOR QUILTER’S (May 18th)

Karen will supply all the art materials for exploration. Students will "play" with colored pencils, pastels, paint sticks, pens as well as watercolor dye a piece of fabric. The class will be outside and end inside, sun or shade! She will demonstrate each technique. Students will go home with samples and a handout for using each technique for their own projects. It's a fun relaxed "Play Day" with no pressure and lots of time to chat and laugh. All you need to bring is a 20" x 30" foam core board for the fabric dye which we will do outside. Karen will supply all the art materials. Wear an old shirt or an apron for the dye activity. $40 fee for workshop with 12-20 students. 5 hours.

The class will start outside with long tables covered with plastic table cloths in the morning - shade or sun. Four students at a table would be max plus I need a table for supplies and demonstration. We need a water supply. I will bring buckets for each table's water supply. We will then come inside where we will need a minimum of four tables for each technique plus one for me. I would appreciate a quilt display rack to hang a sheet so I can display samples of each technique. I will demonstrate each technique and they will divide up into small groups of four (or more) at each table. We will break for lunch and continue after lunch until they have had enough fun. The outside dyed fabrics will be ready to pick up after lunch. I will supply all the fabrics and supplies so it makes for a nice relaxed stress free day.
